UNRWA Faces Dire Funding Cuts
The prospect of the continuation of much of the work done by the UN Relief Work Agency in Gaza and beyond looks to be threatened due to a dramatic lack of funding, Ma’an News reports. Both the salaries of UNRWA workers and the quality of services provided by the agency to Palestinian refugees are in peril, says Ma’an. Adnan Abu Hasana, UNRWA’s media consultant, has seen a drop-off in funding by “big powers” and Arab states alike to be the primary reason for the present situation. This marked lack of funding comes during a period in which the number of Gazan refugees necessitating UNRWA’s services has dramatically increased–those displaced by Israel’s assault last winter foremost among them.
